Its consists of a a Firefox plug-in and a plug-in for either OpenOffice.org (hurrah!) or MS Word (eurgh!).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The 1.5 beta seems very stable and also includes the facility for storing copies of papers if you have access to a webdav server. I've been using Linux as my main desktop operating system since 1995, use &lt;a href="http://www.openoffice.org/"&gt;OpenOffice.org&lt;/a&gt; over MS Office and even run &lt;a href="http://www.rockbox.org/"&gt;Rockbox&lt;/a&gt; on my MP3 player.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;However the one piece of proprietary , and ridiculously expensive, software I've been stuck with has been &lt;a href="http://www.mathworks.co.uk/"&gt;MATLAB&lt;/a&gt; ....until now.  I'd looked at using a combination of Python, &lt;a href="http://scipy.org/SciPy"&gt;Scipy&lt;/a&gt; and &lt;a href="http://matplotlib.sourceforge.net/"&gt;Matplotlib&lt;/a&gt; a few months ago and liked them, but the problem was lack of support for &lt;a href="http://medical.nema.org/"&gt;DICOM&lt;/a&gt; files.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That all changed a few weeks ago  when quite by accident I came across &lt;a href="http://code.google.com/p/pydicom/"&gt;pydicom&lt;/a&gt;. I've rewritten a few MATLAB scripts using it and it's really simple to use.
